The First Steps of Physical Therapy When You’re in Pain

physical therapyDo you need someone who can help you go through motor vehicle accident injury rehab? Maybe you had surgery and now you need post-offer rehabilitation. No matter the reason why you’re in pain, physical therapy can help.

It can be hard to feel motivated to search out a physical therapist when you’re hurting a lot. That’s because pain takes your energy away, so you don’t even have a normal amount of energy. When your energy is so low, it’s hard to do anything, let alone find a new medical provider, make sure they’re the right one for you, and get an appointment.  If you’re hurting, though, finding a physical therapist might be the best thing that you can do for yourself. Here’s how to get started.

Find Your Therapist

Finding a physical therapist should be pretty easy. You will want to find someone who is a specialist in the kind of pain that you have for in the condition of your body. If you need someone to treat your Temporomandibular Joint Syndrome, for instance, you will want to find someone whose specialty is TMJ treatment. If you have been in a car accident, you will want to find someone who specializes in rehab for motor vehicle accident injuries. If you have had surgery, you will want to find a post op rehabilitation specialist.

You can ask around to find a therapist. Your doctor or another medical provider may have recommendations for you. Your friends, family, or neighbors might also know of someone who can help you out. You will probably want to interview a physical therapist before you agree to work with them. Make sure that they have at least several years of experience in the field and that you are comfortable talking to them.

Getting Started with Physical Therapy

Once you found a provider you like, it’s time to get started on your therapy. The sooner you begin your physical therapy, the sooner you will begin to feel better! Make an appointment, and make sure you bring all of your medical records with you. Your physical therapist should go over your medical history, especially the part that is relevant to the treatment they will be providing.

Once they know a little bit about you and your condition, they should come up with a plan for treating it. You should make sure that you’re in agreement with this plan because you’re going to have to follow it carefully. If you have any questions about the plan, this is the time to ask them.

There’s no time like the present to get started on your physical therapy. Most therapists will send you home with exercises or stretches on the very first day, and set up several meetings to follow. At these meetings, they will evaluate your condition and either move forward with the plan or change it, based on how your body is reacting.
